Film sets in the quarry

The Liban Quarry (Kamieniołom Liban) in Kraków is a place with a deep historical and cinematic footprint. Originally founded in 1873 by the Jewish families Liban and Ehrenpreis, it served as a limestone quarry until World War II. During the occupation, it was used by the Nazis as a labor camp where prisoners from the nearby Płaszów concentration camp were forced into hard labor.

In 1993, director Steven Spielberg chose this abandoned quarry as the main location for the film Schindler's List. Based on the original plans, a replica of the Płaszów camp was built here, including 34 barracks, seven guard towers and a road paved with replicas of Jewish tombstones. This set was the only complete structure created specifically for the film.

Zbytky toho tábora s cestou z náhrobků tam ještě pamatuju... Byl to divný pocit, zjistit že na nich stojíme.
