- Abandoned sand mines under Prague

It is located below Prosek and Střížkov and is formed by an extensive network of tunnels that were created by sandstone mining since the 19th century. This sandstone was used not only in construction, but also for scrubbing pots and floors. The quarrying was done by hand, resulting in a labyrinth of tunnels, some of which are up to 700-800 metres long.

The underground consists of several sections, the most famous of which are the Moor and America I. The Moor, originally Hampl's sandpit, is famous for its winding corridors and the damp environment created by the water crash. America I is a smaller part of the system, with two levels, but the amount of cave-ins makes it dangerous to explore.
During World War II, the underground served as an air-raid shelter, as evidenced by the surviving inscriptions on the walls. During the First Republic, unemployed workers lived here, taking advantage of the cool and dry environment of the corridors.
There are also rumours of secret passages leading to Stara Boleslav, which were allegedly used by Napoleon. According to legend, he was even supposed to ride a carriage through the underground passages.
Currently, the Prague 9 municipality is trying to open the underground to the public. The project includes the construction of an entrance building and the creation of a thematic exhibition "The City Under the City". However, it is not yet clear when the underground will be open to the public.
